TERRY-TOON COMICS No. 65, Feb., 1948

Terry-Toon Comics comprised the comic book stories of the characters made famous by Paul Terry’s animation studio, Terrytoons. This cover is by Art Bartsch, who was an animator and art designer for the studio, and features Terrytoons’ major players, Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle.

This first story starring Mighty Mouse is penciled and inked by Art Bartsch (signed) and has some very pretty stuff. I love Bartsch’s drawing and panel composition, particularly panel 1 on page 6 (MM gazing down from the clouds) - so simple, yet so lovely and effective.

House Hunters features Gandy Goose and Sourpuss, a very popular team post-war but hardly remembered now. They were such good pals, never apart. Sourpuss (as his name suggests), was the grousing brain of the outfit. Gandy was a simple, kind fool – showered with good fortune. I don’t know the artist here but wish I did. I'm betting it was an animator from Terrytoons.

Coming up next, more from this same issue - including a Heckle and Jeckle story!

  1. I remember loving Mighty Mouse. As a very young kid I thought he and Mickey were one in the same.
