Ah, another Supermouse artist to love! Many greats have put their imprint on Supermouse; among them Al Hubbard, Milt Stein, Dan Gordon, and Richard Hughes. Comfortable in this rarified company is Gene Fawcette, who drew a bushel of Supermouse stories for Pines Comics.
Among Fawcette’s pleasures are his variable-line brushwork and an angular style which seems very modern - even hip. His layouts and characters always have an appealing sense of joy (no Supermouse artist may enter the pantheon of greats unless Supe’s simple joy at being super is communicated). The following two stories come from Supermouse No. 44, Summer 1958.
"How can you milk Supercow when she's wearing those pants to keep warm?"
ReplyDelete"Easy! I'm an expert pick-pocket!"
I love this. Never in all my days did I imagine seeing those exact words strung together exactly like that.
Was Super Mouse before or after Mighty Mouse?
KW: They came out the same year (1942). Paul Terry (Terrytoons) also released a Super Mouse 9n 1942. Terry changed his creation to Mighty Mouse to avoid confusion.
ReplyDeletethose two stories give me new appreciation for fawcette! thanks mykal!
ReplyDeleteCraig: I will be posting more Fawcette in future! I love his stuff. Thanks for stopping by! -- Mykal
ReplyDeletemy daughter just picked up for me a couple pages of original fawcette supermouee art at a yard sale!
ReplyDeleteCraig: Yow! Super Cool! Original?! At a yard sale?! Outstanding. You have highly trained agents across the breadth of this great land.
ReplyDeleteAlthough not straight-up parodies, there are certain similarities in the supporting casts of these two tales with Walt Disney & Walt Kelly characters.
ReplyDeleteFawcette's inking technique is to die for. You can tell the man knew how to use that brush. Nice stuff.
ReplyDeleteDoug: I couldn't agree more! Great control. I got more Fawcette in the wings.
ReplyDeleteLysdexicuss: Thanks for commenting!
