Little Iodine in "Daze 'N' Knights"

It's high time for a little of Jimmy Hatlo's Little Iodine! This story, "Daze "N' Knights," is from Four Color No. 257, December 1949. The art and story is signed by Hatlo - but might be done by someone working marvelously in the Hatlo style (thoughts?).

Hatlo, best known for the long-running gag strip, They'll Do It Every Time, was such a great writer; and the following captures the Hatlo essentials: Characters that are always so human and flawed, larcenous yet ultimately fair-minded - and very funny.

Big Blog pal, John Kricfalusi, had some fascinating observations about Jimmy Hatlo's work in a post not too long ago at his fantastic blog, John K Stuff. I always enjoy the insights of John K, often getting lost for hours poking around his place. Check out his thinking on Jimmy Hatlo HERE! or HERE!

Before you dash over to John's great blog, here's a B&W one-pager from the inside front cover. That's some sweet line work!

  3. Good timing on this one Mykal, I actually just picked up some Avon and Pocket Book paperback collections of Hatlo's 40's work... I suspect you're correct about someone else possibly on the art here as it looks a bit different than the stuff I just finished in my books.

  4. Karswell: Wow! Love the new avatar! someone's preparing for Halloween!

I hope and pray you'll be posting Hatlo's stuff over at And Everything Else Too! John K has called the work in the comics a cross between Hatlo and Chic Young. That pretty much says it. I really like it a lot, though.

It almost seems that that B&W page might be Hatlo, though.

  5. OK, maybe that last part was wishful thinking. But whoever the artist is, that's some awesome work.

  8. The artist on the Little Iodine comic book was most likely Hy Eisman, a versatile cartoonist who could work in different styles. He worked on comics as different as Adventures Into the Unknown and Little Lulu, according to his Wikipedia bio.

  10. Hello!

The artist on Dell's "Little Iodine" comic books is most likely Al Scaduto, Hatlo's longtime assistant and successor on the strip. Hy Eisman did draw Iodine, but only after Scaduto left in 1966.

    Best,
    Alberto
