The day is fast approaching! Merry Christmas! Here comes one of Walt Scott's famous Christmas stories, "The Little People's Christmas." Walt Scott was best know for his Little People stories, and it's easy to see why: What a nice, classic Christmas feel to story and art. Scott painted the cover as well. Ah, the holidays! This comes from Four Color No. 959, December 1958.

Oh, yeah ! Love the stylized, yet amazingly accurate, way he draws wildlife. Never seen this before~ from an under-recognized artist. Thanx for posting, Mykal !
ReplyDeleteAs an adult, I can appreciate the craftsmanship, but as a kid, this stuff really creeped me out!
ReplyDeleteThe artwork is wonderful. He is a very talented and imaginative illustrator. Nice inking and compositions. Really beautiful stuff!

Lysdexicuss: He does do great deer, doesn't he? Scott is nearly forgotten now, unfortunately, as are so many. That's why posting such work is my pleasure!
ReplyDeleteBill: I sort of know what you mean. I used to get the same heebie jeebies from the work of William Wallace Denslow, the original illustrator of The Wizard of Oz, for much the same reasons, I bet: A real-looking world that seems at any moment about to spill over into the grotesque. With Scott, though, the stories are so warm and straightforward, I love the artwork.
Alberto: I agree - truly wonderfully composed panels and pages.
this is superlative!
ReplyDeleteMykal- I share your initial thoughts on Denslow. Now, I LOVE his work! My lifelong dream has been to illustrate an Oz story, but if I did, I think WD's work would be too much to "turn off".
ReplyDeleteThank you for printing this Walt Scott story. My Grandpa worked for the NEA Syndicate and knew Walt Scott. He made Christmas cards for the family and I still have them. I loved the Little People when I was a child and treasure the Walt Scott painting in my bedroom.
ReplyDeleteRichard: The pleasure is mine. I love Scott's Christmas work.
