Howie Post passed away May of 2010 and, although I never met him, his passing felt like the death of a friend. I have loved his work since I was a boy. I mean, really, can't you just feel an artist having a ball at the drawing table in these following stories? Just look at the size of those mitts on the two tuff ghosts in our first story, "The Boo Thrower," which comes from The Friendly Ghost, Casper, No. 24 (August, 1960).
"Movie Land," comes from The Friendly Ghost, Casper, No. 51, November 1962.
And just because he did some of the greatest covers in kids' comics history, let's throw this Warren Kremer gem into the bargain for fun. this is from The Friendly Ghost, Casper No. 25 (August, 1960).
Wa-hay!
ReplyDeleteYou're back! Great. Soooo great––
Thanks, Gabriel! I'll try to be more consistant.
ReplyDeleteI'll second that, it's good to see you're back with more great kids' comics. And I can't criticize anyone for being inconsistent...sometimes my updates at Fluffy and Mervin are few and far between as well. Reading these makes me want to break out the New Casper Cartoon Show DVD again.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see you and more Harvey Comics goodness back again! When I was a kid, my brother and I had a lot of Harvey, Archie and Gold Key/Whitman books around the house. I haven't seen much Harvey stuff reprinted, so it's nice to see them here.
ReplyDeleteBTW, have you checked out this site: http://looneycomics.blogspot.com/ ? Lots of Looney Tunes comics fun there!
Debbie: Great to hear from you! I am going to make a real effort to post more. Still loving Fluffy and Mervin!
ReplyDeleteI have checked out that Looney Tunes blog, and it's awesome!
Glad to see you back Mykal! I hope all's well! LOVE the Post stuff! thanks for sharing! More please! *L*
ReplyDeleteGREAT to have you back Mykal! I hope all's well! the Post stuff is AMAZING as usual, can look at his stuff all day, inspiring! More please! *L*
ReplyDeleteRich: Howie Post is one of my all time favorites, for sure. He is an artist that you will see here over and over. If interested, click the "Howie Post" label under this post. You will find a ton!
ReplyDeleteLooking these over, the layouts, expressions and poses are all very good. I especially liked how Spooky folded up like an accordion when the large ghost pounded him...you could see the animators doing the same gag almost the way it was drawn here. I wonder if Howie Post was ever an animator?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I can understand the way you felt upon Post's passing. I felt much the same way when Charles M. Schulz passed away in 2000. I don't think I picked up a pencil to draw for months after that.
Debbie: Post animated very early in his career, primarily doing "inbetweens," the frames between drawings to add smoothness (I'm sure you knew that). I think part of Post's comic art genius was that he was probably the most unstiff artist I have ever seen. Everything had loose, bouncy movement.
ReplyDeleteLong before I began thinking about artists, I could tell that the Spooky stories were “different” from the Casper ones. Both great, but Post had a better eye for “funny”.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you are back!
Joe: Funny is the word. just the look of Post's work is funny and joyful in a way that really tickles the funnybone.
ReplyDeleteAdd my voice to the "glad you're back" chorus.
ReplyDeleteBut y'know, you've stopped zipping them up as a CBZ/CBR archive again! :)
Patrick: I'm glad to be back. Yeah, I ran into a copyright problem (a warning) using the archived downloadables, so I stopped.
ReplyDeleteWell THAT bites!
ReplyDeleteOh well... guess it'll have to remain an on-line only experience.
